Groundwater‐surface water exchange as key control for instream and groundwater nitrate concentrations along a first‐order agricultural stream

چکیده

Lower-order streams (first- and second-order) define the initial, landscape-related, chemical signature of stream water in catchments. To date, first-order have been perceived as predominantly draining systems, which collect solutes from surrounding groundwater surface runoff simply mirror composition inputs. In this study, impact stream-groundwater exchange fluxes on chemistry a first order agricultural (Schönbrunnen) its connected south-western Germany was assessed combining 222Rn, dissolved ions (chloride, sulphate, nitrate), salt tracer tests with investigations discharge hydraulic gradients. The findings suggest that stream-water lower-order is governed by an intricate interplay between dynamic, bidirectional solute leading to pronounced hydrologic turnover along studied reaches. High nitrate concentrations (up 79 mg/L NO3−) were attenuated downstream direction (a mean value 39 mg/L) without increase discharge, suggesting redox processes occurring during sediment passage sequential infiltration exfiltration zones affect chemistry. Nitrate infiltrating into aquifer at distinct losing spots subject denitrification within few decimetres streambed, while concurrent low-nitrate gaining compensated for flow losses turn diluted instream concentrations. summary imply (1) mixing resulting (hydrologic turnover) affects concentrations, (2) streambed reaches near-stream significantly contributes reactive elimination, (3) oxidation ammonium could be secondary source inputs stream.

Geostatistical Methods for Mapping Groundwater Nitrate Concentrations

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the spatial changes of groundwater nitrate concentrations by using geostatistical methods based on data from 119 groundwater wells. Geostatistical methods have been used widely as a convenient tool to make decision on the management of behavior of hydrochemical parameters in groundwater. To evaluate the spatial changes nitrate concentrations in groundwat...

Spatial Inference of Nitrate Concentrations in Groundwater

We develop a method for multi-scale estimation of pollutant concentrations, based on a nonparametric spatial statistical model. We apply this method to estimate nitrate concentrations in groundwater over the mid-Atlantic states, using measurements gathered during a period of ten years. A map of the fine-scale estimated nitrate concentration is obtained, as well as maps of the estimated county-l...

Characterization of groundwater-stream water interactions

Papers published in Hydrology and Earth System Sciences Discussions are under open-access review for the journal Hydrology and Earth System Sciences Abstract Streambed temperatures can be easily, accurately and inexpensively measured at many locations. We obtained 140 vertical streambed temperature profiles along a 220 m section of a small artificial stream to characterize patterns of groundwat...

Agricultural Impact on Groundwater Vulnerability to Nitrate in Northern Croatia

Th ere is noticeable negative impact on soil and water quality caused by nutrient leaching, especially nitrate. Five regions in Croatia are preliminary delineated as nitrate vulnerable zones, including potentially vulnerable zones (PVZ) and vulnerable zones (VZ), one of them being Varaždin County. Agricultural land spreads on 59% of its total area. Th e survey was carried out to analyze two ava...
